Imports
Frequently Asked Questions
Importing from Thailand is easier than most people think. While
rice is still Thailand's greatest export, Thailand would not survive
economically without tourism and exports of a countless variety of goods
made in hundreds of villages throughout the country. Cottage industries
and entrepreneurism are encouraged by the government and provide income
for countless families.
Here are just a few of the questions asked of me throughout my years of
importing from Thailand. I answer them briefly here but go into much
more detail in my ebook.
********************************************************************************
How
much profit margin should I expect for imported goods from Thailand?
Figuring in
cost of products, shipping, airfare, food and lodging, I calculated my
profit to be an average of approximately 800%, or $8 for every $1 spent.
Some products were more than 20X cost, some only 3X, but the average was
8X. After that you need to analyze your overhead back home (retail
space, storage, etc.). My overhead ran about $2 per $1 spent, bringing
my overall profit to $6 for every $1 spent.
What are all of the expenses involved when
importing
from Thailand?
To sum up the components as mentioned above, there is the cost of goods
and shipping, roundtrip airfare to Thailand, food and lodging, commuting
within Thailand, and the cost of running your business back home. The
costs of each of these components will vary, but after a while you will
find an average and find ways to bring down costs on every aspect of
your import business. If you are importing into Europe, you also need to
add your VAT.
Aren't you exploiting the Thai people by importing their products?
I have been asked this question countless times. The complete opposite
of this misconception is true. First of all, you are helping the Thai
people provide for their families. Secondly, I have found the working
conditions in Thailand
to be better than the working conditions in America. Lunches
generally last an hour and often have the feel of a picnic. If you are
doing business during the lunch hour, you will be invited to eat with
them. After lunch, naps are common. Yet still, productivity is high.
Also, childcare is prevalent in the workplace. I cannot speak about
other countries because my expertise is in importing from Thailand.
Are Thai
imports
better
than imports from other countries?
It depends on the product. If you want to import electronics, Thailand
is not the best place for you. And you may find better deals for
mass-produced goods importing from China. But overall, I don't think
Thailand can be beat.
Why did you choose
imports
from Thailand
over imports from China or
other countries?
Other than the question answered above,
after my first trip to Thailand I was hooked. The Thai people are
wonderful, the variety of goods is plentiful, the craftsmanship is
superb and the costs are low.
What is the
cost
of shipping containers from Thailand?
The price of shipping containers from Thailand varies from one shipping
company to the next and one month to the next. Packing and shipping a
container is around $4000 for a 20 foot container and about $6000 for a
40 foot container. You would be amazed at how much you can fit in one
container! But shipping by container isn't always the best way to ship
your Thai goods back home especially on a limited budget and first-time
importers. I explain various shipping methods in my ebook, along with
pros and cons of each method. By the way, you can sometimes buy the
container itself for around $1500, painted any way you like, which you
can sell for a profit or find a use for yourself.
What kinds of goods can I
import from Thailand?
Metalwork, marble, furniture, antiques, clothing, silk, jewelry, bronze,
building materials, artwork, resin products, ceramics, wood sculptures,
handbags.. The list goes on and on. I have bought and sold all of these
items.
Some examples are on the Product Gallery page.
Can I export goods into Thailand?
Unfortunately, I have never found anything I could export to Thailand
for a profit. Besides, they charge
import duties and generally don't make things easy for you because they
would rather see products leaving Thailand than entering Thailand.
Do you have any experience bringing
Thai
imports into Europe?
While I have not imported anything from Thailand into Europe myself, I
have taken many people on Thailand buying trips from other countries,
mostly England and Australia. There aren't many differences from one
country to the next, other than the VAT taxes required to bring them
into the country. Many people in America complain about taxes but
America's overall tax rate is generally less than European countries and
there are no Value Added Taxes (VAT) required to bring Thai goods into America.
How
do I sell my goods I import from Thailand once I get them back home?
This is probably the most important question of all! My ebook describes
10 different selling venues. A few require a sizeable investment but
most can be done on a shoestring. I have tried many methods successfully
and describe them in detail in my ebook.
Do you offer consultation?
If you still
have questions after reading my
ebook, you can email me and I will respond. Most of your questions will
be answered in the ebook, but if you find something unclear or lacking
in explanation, I will do my best to help you succeed in your new
venture.
